Welcome to Geekdom!

Hi, I’m Jochen, the sysop (aka administrator) of this community platform.

My goal is to make Geekdom a welcoming place for people like me: people who are passionate about specific topics and would like to share their enthusiasm and expertise with others.

The idea to build the Geekdom community, starting with a Mastodon instance, came to me in October 2022, a few months after I created an account on Mastodon.social in search of more civilized conversations. I’ve been a system administrator for decades, and at my company, I’m leading a team of web operations experts. When the influx of Twitter refugees started overwhelming instances and their admins, building a Mastodon service that could handle rapid growth at maximum uptime appeared to me as the perfect challenge.

Over the course of a few live coding streams, I built the infrastructure that makes Geekdom one of the most powerful Mastodon instances to date. I’ve built my whole career on Open Source Software, and allowing others to watch me run an IT business has been my way of giving back to the Open Source Community for a few years now.
